An ADA Kitchen

Cooking in an Accessible Kitchen

Working on this kitchen was a real honor for me. You see I was still in school when this family trusted me to design their kitchen for them. (We also did the master bathroom too)

This was an active family with three kids living in the home and the mom was confined to a wheelchair. She didn't let that stop her from anything she was determined to do though. She still had the responsibility of raising her family and making sure they had a normal life. I couldn't help but feel a true admiration for this woman.

Everything had to be thoroughly thought out. We created a workflow for her that allowed her to prepare meals with the least amount of movement on her part. We also had to make it easy for the people who are not disabled so they can function well in this kitchen too.

The most important thing to the mom was that she didn't want it to look like an institutional space. She has seen other homes and offices that were designed to be ADA compatible and she didn't want any of that, she wanted it to look like a home.
